The Lithuanian Presidency of the CBSS for the year 2009-2010 will commence on the 1 July 2009.
During the Presidency, Lithuania will continue to implement reform measures as decided by the Council of the Baltic Sea States and in consistence with the agreed priorities.
This will entail, amongst other issues, the consolidation of human and financial resources to provide solutions to urgent issues in the areas of environment, economic development, energy, education and culture, civil security and the human dimension.
The Presidency will focus attention and efforts on the following issues:
Innovation as an essential source of scientific and technological progress which ensures sustainable development, economic competition and safe high quality social environments.
Cross-border cooperation as the foundation for the betterment of intergovernmental, international and interregional relations involving a wide range of social groups into a multi-faceted cooperation, encouraging mutual understanding, facilitating movement of people across borders, sharing best practice and preservation of common cultural heritage.
Clean environment and safe living conditions in the Baltic Sea Region as a vital and essential condition for a safe and viable social life and effective economic activities in the region.
We shall seek the active participation of the neighbouring Kaliningrad region of the Russian Federation and Belarus in the implementation of the said priorities, also maintaining close cooperation with other regional and sub regional councils, institutions and governmental and nongovernmental organisations, and by encouraging a more active involvement of the CBSS Observer States.
