The Baltic Sea Bioenergy Promotion Project

The project is acknowledged as a strategic project by the Baltic Sea Region Programme 2007-2013 Monitoring Committee. The proposal has been designed in co-operation with BASREC. The Baltic Sea Bioenergy Promotion Project is expected to run during 2009-2011.

The project is a platform for cross-sectoral and transnational networking to facilitate information and knowledge exchange, a coordinated policy development and application of bio-energy promotion instruments. The project aims at strengthening the development towards a sustainable, competitive and territorially integrated Baltic Sea Region in the field of sustainable use of bio-energy. One of the main objectives is to assess and optimize the existing policies for sustainable supply and use of biomass originating from different sources and produced for heating and cooling, electricity generation, and as a transport fuel. Provision of information and knowledge transfer will ensure transparent business possibilities between the BSR countries.

The project has held several workshops and conferences focused on sustainability criteria for the production and use of biomass, national renewable energy action plans, certification systems, etc. the regional business/industry assessment report was finalised in November 2009. The BSR country policy assessments are currently being prepared. In addition, the Virtual Brokerage Platform is under construction.
