Barbershop Conference “Mobilizing Men and Boys for Gender Equality in the Baltic Sea Region” on 23 May 2017

The Icelandic Presidency of the Council of Baltic Sea States (CBSS)  and the Nordic Council of Ministers (NCM) will host the Barbershop Conference “Mobilizing Men and Boys for Gender Equality in the Baltic Sea Region“ on 23 May 2017 in Reykjavik, Iceland.

Gender inequality is one of the most significant global challenges today. To solve the issue, and to achieve true gender equality, it is of great importance to involve men and boys in the discussion and make them part of the solution. The Barbershop concept seeks innovative ways for men to engage in gender topics and motivate their male peers to address discriminatory stereotypes of masculinity. “At the barbershop” men can talk about gender equality in a comfortable and safe environment, and address how male leaders can drive this dialogue forward. Barbershop events encourage men and boys to become active in promoting gender equality by better understanding how gender inequality limits the ability of individuals and communities to reach their full human, economic and social potential.

This Barbershop Conference will gather government officials, representatives of non–governmental and international organisations, regional networks, law enforcement and civil protection agencies, and other stakeholders from the Baltic Sea Region to discuss how gender relates to violence and is an important factor in exploitation and trafficking in human beings. By bringing together experts from a variety of fields, the aim of the event is to forge synergies and to gain a better understanding of gender stereotypes and (gender-based) violence.

The conference will open with a high level panel and offer two workshops on gender and different types of violence. An expert panel on causes and effect of human trafficking for sexual exploitation will conclude the event and provide a different perspective and right tools to address gender inequality and violence and become agents of change.
