Press Release: International conference launching a cooperation model to harmonise anti trafficking practices in the Baltic Sea Region

Find this press release in Swedish here.

Identified human trafficking victims are often returned from country of destination to a country of origin- It means that they are transferred from one national assistance system to another. If these systems are not compatible and the transition is not smooth, the victim does not receive needed help and is at higher risk of being re-trafficked. Some are exploited in several countries of the Baltic Sea Region and sometimes subjected to multiple forms of exploitation.

Among professionals in human trafficking field there is a lack of information about the different identification and assistance systems in different countries. To best protect and help trafficking victims, structured and efficient cross-border cooperation in the Baltic Sea Region should be not only a preferred practice, but a standard.

To standardise practices around the Baltic Sea Region, the CBSS Task Force against Trafficking in Human Beings is launching a Transnational Referral Mechanism at an international conference in Warsaw, co-organised with the Ministry of the Interior and Administration of Poland. The cooperation mechanism also extends to Bulgaria, Romania and Ukraine – main countries of origin for victims of human trafficking in the region. Additionally, to better inform and involve wider society in the fight against trafficking and exploitation, a glossary and guidelines for journalists reporting on human trafficking cases will also be launched.

The conference has attracted journalists, government officials, representatives from NGOs, the academia, national and international organisations.

Activities are implemented in the frame of the project HOF-BSR – Paving the Way for the Harmonized Operational Framework in the Baltic Sea Region with funding from the Government Offices of Sweden and the Swedish Institute.
